In 2023 we travelled to Lightning Ridge, a small community in the west of New South Wales, Australia, to try our hand at opal hunting. While we didn’t return with millions of dollars’ worth of gems, we had a wonderful time — dirty, dusty, and full of laughter as we searched for those flashes of colour hidden beneath the earth.

It was on that trip that the first draft of this blanket was born. I was working on plenty of other crochet projects, but as my mind relaxed away from daily routines, ideas began to flow. Starting as a hexagon that wobbled its way into chaos, I pulled it back, deciphered my notes and photos, and refined it into the design I’m so excited to share with you now.

The Opal Hunting Blanket reflects the spirit of discovery — flashes of colour, unexpected beauty, and the joy of creating something truly one of a kind.
